How to Organize Your Home for Back-to-School Season
Summer naturally has a chaotic energy.
Extra toys everywhere, shoes seem to multiply by the door, closets are overflowing, and regular cleaning routines can easily fall apart. And then suddenly, the first day of school is next week.
Between new schedules, school supplies, activities, and homework, getting your home back in order can feel impossible.
But you don’t have to do all the things. Doing a little here and there can be more effective than trying to tackle it all in one weekend.
A little decluttering, some simple organization, and a good deep clean can help your home feel refreshed and ready for back-to-school season. Here are a few small ways to get started.
1. Pick One Room to Declutter First
Start small here. Before you commit to decluttering the house with big, black trash bag energy, start with one area or room.
Within that area, remove items that no longer fit into your life or season. This will be a unique-to-you list. But, here’s a quick way to make it easier:
Leave out a box for anything you need to donate. Then, whenever you come across an item that needs to go, in the box it goes. This way, decluttering can become part of the daily rhythm instead of a stressful, chaotic day.
When the donation box is full, just take it to the nearest Goodwill (maybe the one in Idaho Falls). Repeat the process consistently to remove excess clutter as it comes.
2. Reset Your Entryway
Your entryway could be everyone’s catch-all. Your kids throw any item on the floor once they come home:
- Backpacks
- Shoes
- Socks
- Jackets
- Lunchboxes
- Sports equipment
- School papers
- Random toys
So, with school starting, it might help to designate one, contained spot at the entryway (or another location) for all school items like backpacks and shoes.
3. Get the Kids’ Bedrooms Back in Order
Summer often means more time spent playing, more clothes coming in and out of closets, and toys scattered throughout the house.
Before school begins, take some time to reset your kids’ bedrooms. Put away clothes that no longer fit, rotate seasonal clothing if needed, and encourage your kids to choose toys they no longer use for your donation bin.
Then, give everything else a home.
You don’t need complicated organizing systems. Sometimes a few labeled bins, baskets, or designated shelves are all you need to make keeping a room tidy easier.
4. Create a Homework Station
If your kids don’t already have a designated homework spot, consider creating one before school starts.
It doesn’t have to be an entire room or elaborate desk setup. Here are a few ideas:
- A small section of the kitchen counter
- Dining room
- Bedroom
- Coffee table
- Book shelf Having one consistent place for homework can help keep school supplies from spreading throughout the house.
5. Give Your Kitchen and Pantry a Reset
Back-to-school mornings can be busy enough without digging through an overflowing pantry looking for something to pack in a lunch.
Here are a few quick tasks that might help free up your mind:
- Check expiration dates
- Toss food your family isn’t going to eat
- Create a grab-and-go snack area
- Do a quick refrigerator clean-out
6. Don’t Forget the Bathrooms
Starting the school with a fresh, clean bathroom can spark joy for everyone.
Clean off the summer grime:
- Wipe down surfaces
- Clean mirrors
- Scrub tubs and showers
- Mop floors
Once it’s done, bathrooms will be one less thing you have to worry about.
8. Let Someone Else Take Cleaning Off Your Plate
Here’s the thing about back-to-school season: you already have enough to do.
You’re buying school supplies, adjusting bedtimes, figuring out new schedules, coordinating activities, packing lunches, helping with homework, and trying to get everyone out the door on time.
